Happy Together - My favourite new sitcom that you definitely need to watch
Currently, the television world is filled with situation-comedies: The Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, to name a few. But CBS' Happy Together is a breath of fresh air and absolute comedy gold.
It stars Damon Wayans Jr (known for his roles in ABC's Happy Endings and Fox's New Girl) and Amber Stevens West (gaining fame from her roles in ABC's family sitcom Greek and NBC's The Carmichael Show) as married couple Jake and Claire.
Their mundane, quiet lifestyles are turned upside down when a growing pop star Cooper James (played by Felix Mallard) movies into the pair's home after growing tired of the celebrity lifestyle. Each episode also features appearances from Claire's parents, retired doctors who very much enjoy their free time with countless alcoholic beverages.
I was very much excited for Happy Together to premiere after watching a preview trailer back in May earlier this year. It featured a charismatic couple, who have great chemistry on screen, and included lots of topical humour. After seeing both Damon and Amber in previous projects, I knew that this show was going to be awesome.
And the pilot episode did not disappoint. It was a great introduction to the series: the entirely relatable relationship between Jake and Claire, the cultural differences between Cooper and the married couple, it was something totally different that would be loved by a wide audience. It appeals to families, young adults, I don't think there's anyone that wouldn't enjoy the laughs that it creates.
I particularly enjoy the performances from Wayans Jr and Stevens-West. The pair bounce off of each other perfectly. Damon is hilarious. Jake's cheeky demeanour and nerd-like awkwardness is super entertaining to watch. And Amber is just superb. I love everything about Claire: her over-eagerness with Cooper, the relationship with her parents, she's absolutely charming and a fantastic example of a female lead within the vast sit-com genre.
With only a few episodes being released thus far, I'm really hoping the future looks bright. After holding solid ratings in the US and only just airing here in the UK, with luck we'll get to see more of the dynamic trio of Jake, Claire and Cooper in action for the upcoming 2018/19 season.
