Rebecca Recommends...

So remember when I started a weekly segment on this blog where I shared some of the stuff I had been enjoying in the last seven days? Well, she's had a little bit of a revamp and we now have a much snazzier title. Just like "Last Week I've Been", I'll be recommending (see what I did there?) some of my favourite things, and what better way to return than with the first week of May?

In our seventh (!) week in lockdown, we celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE Day and got very excited about the announcement of another Star Wars movie. Here's what I have been loving this week:

Hollywood

Netflix's new miniseries is another triumph by the streaming giant, thanks to the brain of Ryan Murphy and the performances of a stellar ensemble cast. Hollywood follows a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers trying to achieve their dreams of fame and stardom during the golden age of Hollywood. The big twist is that it explores the system of power and corruption still seen today in our own entertainment landscape, and deconstructs the known biases of gender, race and sexuality to suggest what the industry might have looked like if the old ways had been destroyed. Boasting stars such as Darren Criss, Holland Taylor, Jim Parsons and Patti LuPone, these are just a few of the names that bring effervescent energy to the characters portrayed. Despite criticism, the miniseries is thoughtful and provoking but it does lose some focus by reflecting a perspective that seems more like a fantasy than reality. Nonetheless, I implore you to devote a short bit of your time in quarantine to this wonderful series as the cast is truly dazzling and the production is stylistically stunning. You can watch Hollywood on Netflix here.

Stuck with U

Now you know me, I would be singing and dancing about any new track from Ariana Grande however her new collaboration with fellow pop superstar Justin Bieber is something special. The singers announced the single last week, with all net proceeds from the song being donated to the First Responders Children's Foundation. The accompanying music video proves that you don't need a huge budget to create something heartwarming and unique, consisting of clips of fans and celebrities across the world. It's nice to see the two performers doing their bit to help those in need during the pandemic and manager Scooter Braun said that the single is the first of many charity releases throughout the upcoming year. With a catchy hook and dulcet harmonies, Stuck with U is a great way to revel in the fact that being trapped indoors with loved ones might not be so bad after all.

Harry Potter At Home

Everybody loves Harry Potter in some shape or format. Whether its the books, movies, theme park rides or video games, we all have an appreciation for all things Hogwarts. So you can imagine how exciting it was when Wizarding World announced a new podcast series titled "Harry Potter at Home". Stars of sport, music and entertainment have lent their voices by reading chapters of the acclaimed first book in the HP series Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (or Sorcerer's Stone if you're based in the US). The first two chapters are available on both the Wizarding World website and Spotify, and I for one cannot wait to escape into the magic of Harry and his pals. Plus the first chapter is read by Daniel Radcliffe so tell me how that isn't the most magical thing on the planet?
