After a month's holiday (whoops!) #RebeccaRecommends is back!
This week, we tragically lost beloved Glee alumni Naya Rivera and Rihanna announced the launch of her new skincare line at Fenty. Here's what I've been loving in the last seven days:
Under My Influence - The Aces
The Aces, a Utah-based girl band, released their second album on Friday after a two-year wait. Under My Influence oozes indie pop, with 14 brand new tracks that will have you dancing around your bedroom without a care as you blast them at full volume. The alt-pop band have been signed to Red Bull Records since 2016 but the quartet has been together since school. Their first album When My Heart Felt Volcanic received acclaim and admiration back in 2018 so fans have been eagerly awaiting their return to music. The lyrics and melodies, like their last album, are bright and funky: each song tells a different story of love and growing up with honesty and relatability. Songs like Kelly, Daydream and Lost Angeles are sure to be favourites with listeners, with Daydream already boasting nearly 5 million streams on Spotify. You can listen to Under My Influence on Spotify and Apple Music.
Netflix's brand new fantasy series is sure to gain plenty of viewership. It's not quite on the same level as Game of Thrones or The Witcher but after ten episodes it seems very promising looking forward. 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford plays the role of Arthurian legend Nimue, a powerful, young sorceress who later becomes 'The Lady of the Lake'. Supporting characters includes all the classics (Arthur, Merlin, Morgana, Lancelot and Percival) who are each tied to Nimue in their own complex and individual way. Love, heartbreak, revenge and royalty: it's the usual recipe that makes the perfect fantasy narrative. Langford is pretty superb as Nimue, most definitely the highlight of a story that gets a little bit lost at times but manages to pull it back in moments of epic action and endearing affairs. Based on the season finale, the door is very much open to continue the saga of Nimue but (*spoiler ahead*) whether she is still a major part of the story is unknown. You can watch Cursed on Netflix.
Canada's Drag Race
The Drag Race family expands, this time finding a home in the snowscapes of Canada. 12 brand new queens face off to win the title of the first Canadian Drag Race Superstar and the grand prize of $100,000. The usual judging panel is replaced by Drag Race alum Brooke Lynn Hytes, actor and model Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman and fashion model Stacey McKenzie. Like always, the queens are vivacious, quirky and spirited, with the drama starting very early on. While the essence and character of RuPaul is a big miss, the show does manage to work well. The guest judges probably won't be recognisable to UK viewers but they do bring an extra set of eyes and brains when it comes to helping choose which queen will sashay away each week. The judging feels much more brutal, proving that you really do need to excel in order to claim the title of Drag Race Superstar. You can watch Canada's Drag Race on BBC iPlayer.
