Rebecca Recommends...

Of course, T-Swift is getting discussed

This week, we celebrated 10 years of One Direction and Taylor Swift surprised us all with her eighth studio album. Here's what I've been loving in the last seven days:

American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace

American Crime Story has been mentioned before in my recommendations (The People v. O.J. Simpson was truly exceptional) and the series' second season is excellent once again. It explores the murder of acclaimed fashion designer Gianni Versace, who was murdered in July 1997 by American spree killer Andrew Cunanan. Starting with an arduous bang, 9 episodes follow the murder mystery behind the convoluted movements of Cunanan which caused him the murder 5 people within a three-month period. The show's main cast includes Glee star Darren Criss, Venezuelan actor Édgar Ramírez, Latin pop-star Ricky Martin and Academy Award-winning actress Penélope Cruz. Criss is dazzling as Cunanan, presenting astounding levels of insanity and lunacy to portray the troubled murder. Gone is the fun-loving and sweet Blaine Anderson that fans knew him as: this performance is a career-defining moment for the young actor which won him an Emmy, Golden Globe and a SAG award. You can watch American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace on Netflix.

The Young Offenders - Series 3

Cheeky but loveable Irish rogues Jock and Conor are back to cause plenty more mayhem in the city of Cork. Originally developed from the 2016 film of the same name, the sitcom returns for its third series, exploring Jock's new role as a father. From the first episode, the show already proves that it has not lost its funny touch, with Jock and Conor being roped into helping local nut-job Billy Murphy with an amateur heist but it all goes wrong when baby Star becomes part of the process. The comedic chemistry between Alex Murphy (Conor) and Chris Walley (Jock) continues to be brilliant and the performance of Shane Casey (Billy Murphy) is absolutely rib-tickling (to me, Billy is the highlight of the series). Filled with shenanigans and chaos, The Young Offenders is a perfect escape during today's heavy climate but also ensures to provide heartwarming moments of family and friendship. You can watch the third series of The Young Offenders on BBC iPlayer.

Folklore - Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift suddenly appeared out of nowhere this week and dropped her eighth studio album, Folklore. It's not even been a year since synth-pop record Lover and Swift decided to jump on the bandwagon by using quarantine to create new music. Folklore is very much reminiscent of early T-Swift with heavy use of pianos and guitars, and detailed storytelling in Taylor's songwriting exploring different narratives close to the singer's heart: for example, Cardigan, August and Betty depict a love triangle but each describes a different perspective at a different point in time. Already breaking records, the album sold over 1.3 million copies globally in 24 hours and scored the biggest debut in Spotify history for an album by a female artist. This album could be the biggest debut of 2020 and Swift's seventh #1 album. The American singer-songwriter has demonstrated that her talents are still beloved and noteworthy, proving that the name 'Miss Americana' is so much more than a Netflix title. You can listen to Folklore on Spotify and Apple Music.
